| Obverse description | Europa seated left upon a bull advancing left, her drapery billowing; the figure is rendered in a fluid Hellenistic style typical of Phoenician civic bronzes of the period. Greek legend ΣΙΔΩΝΙΩΝ arcs around the upper and right field, identifying the issuing city of Sidon. The flan is irregular and somewhat thick, consistent with hand-hammered Phoenician civic coinage of the 2nd century BC. Surfaces show a dark brown patina with areas of green cuprite encrustation. |
