Reverse description Facing Gorgoneion (Medusa head) depicted frontally at center, with wide-open eyes, protruding tongue, and a mass of serpentine curls radiating symmetrically around the face. The apotropaic image is boldly rendered in relief, a motif closely associated with Athena's aegis. The surrounding field is plain. This design is characteristic of the autonomous bronze coinage struck by the island city-state of Astypalaia during the Hellenistic period.
