Phokaia's bronze coinage of this period reflects a city navigating awkward political geometry — nominally free under Roman oversight following the reorganization of Asia Minor after 133 BC, yet still issuing civic bronze with enough regularity to suggest active local commerce. The city's silver electrum coinage, once among the most respected in the Aegean, had long since ceased production, leaving bronze as the workhorse of daily exchange.
