The Cavari were a Gallic people settled in the lower Rhône valley, around the region of modern Carpentras and Orange. Their bronze issues fall squarely within the final convulsions of Gallic monetary autonomy — struck in the years immediately following Actium, as Augustus was consolidating Roman authority over the western provinces and local coinage rights were being progressively curtailed.
