Additional information

The Cavari were a Gallic people settled in the lower Rhône valley, around the region of modern Carpentras and Orange. Their bronze issues fall squarely within the final convulsions of Gallic monetary autonomy — struck in the years immediately following Actium, as Augustus was consolidating Roman authority over the western provinces and local coinage rights were being progressively curtailed. Whether this piece was struck under Roman sufferance or in defiance of encroaching administrative pressure remains an open question in the literature.
