Ouranopolis — "City of Heaven" — was founded by Alexarchos, brother of Cassander of Macedon, sometime around 316–300 BC as a utopian experiment. Alexarchos reportedly invented his own dialect, issuing proclamations his own subjects could not read. The city's existence was brief; it likely dissolved or was absorbed within a generation, which explains why this bronze coinage survives in relatively small numbers across only a handful of well-documented specimens tied to the SNG ANS and BMC references.
