Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed prominently at center within an ornate Baroque cartouche, featuring the traditional escutcheon of Portugal with five bezants arranged in quincunx on the central inescutcheon and a border of seven castles. The shield is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown and flanked by elaborate acanthus-leaf and scrollwork mantling that fills the field. No legend appears on the reverse; the design relies entirely on the heraldic achievement as the central compositional element. The entire design is enclosed within the same rope border as the obverse, consistent in style with the colonial gold coinage of this period.
