| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King José I facing right, rendered in high relief in the Baroque portrait style characteristic of mid-18th-century Portuguese colonial coinage. The king's elaborately curled periwig falls prominently behind the neck, with finely engraved locks. The mint mark (B or R) appears below the truncation, with the date centered in the lower field beneath the effigy. The circumferential Latin legend reads JOSEPHUS I D.G. PORT. ET ALG. REX, separated by pellet stops, and is contained within a finely executed rope or cord border encircling the entire coin. |
