Obverse description Draped laureate bust of King João V facing right, rendered in high relief in the Baroque style. The king's hair is elaborately curled and adorned with a laurel wreath, falling in long locks over his shoulder. The circular legend IOANNES. V. D. G. PORT. ET. ALG. REX. runs along the periphery. The date appears in the lower exergue flanked by the Rio de Janeiro mintmark R, struck below the bust truncation.
