Reverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms, in the 1st type of shield design, occupies the centre of the field, displaying the traditional quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) within the shield, which is framed by elaborate Baroque mantling and flanked by armillary sphere and royal crown supporters. A large royal crown surmounts the shield, its jewelled arches rendered in fine detail. Decorative floral and scroll flourishes fill the lateral fields, completing the heraldic composition. The reverse legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (By this sign you shall conquer) is absent from the peripheral field, the design relying entirely on the armorial achievement as the primary device.
