The shield displays the traditional quinas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, enclosed within a bordure of castles. Flanking the crowned shield are the denomination numeral '160' to the right and the last two digits of the date to the left, with floral or pellet ornaments filling the remaining field. The circular legend, read in retrograde on this example, runs along the coin's periphery within a beaded border. |

The armillary sphere, symbolizing Portuguese maritime sovereignty and dominion over Brazil, is rendered in fine detail with visible rings and meridians. A mintmark — 'P' for coins struck at the Pernambuco (Recife) mint — appears in the field where applicable. The reverse legend is disposed around the periphery within a beaded border, referencing the dynastic motto of the House of Braganza. |
