Reverse description The central device consists of a large armillary sphere rendered in high relief, its rings and equatorial bands boldly delineated, mounted on a stand at top and bottom. Superimposed diagonally across the sphere is the cross of the Order of Christ — a plain cross pattée with distinctive stepped arms — creating a striking compositional contrast between the two emblems of Portuguese sovereignty and maritime exploration. The circumferential Latin legend SVBQ. SIGN. NATA. STAB. is distributed around the periphery, reading continuously around the field. The reeded edge is clearly visible, and the overall design fills the flan with little open field.
