The "Low Crown" and "High Crown" designations refer to a genuine die variation in the crowned globe punch used during Maria I's reign — the height of the crown above the globe differs measurably between emission periods, a distinction serious collectors track carefully within this type. Bentes lists them separately as 295 and 296 for precisely that reason.
Maria I's reign saw Portugal increasingly dependent on Brazilian silver to sustain domestic coinage, and the Lisbon Mint's output during the 1787–1797 window reflected that colonial pipeline directly. Her later years of rule were conducted under a regency after she was declared mentally incompetent in 1799.
