Obverse description The crowned Portuguese royal arms occupy the central field, the shield displaying the traditional quartered composition with the escutcheons of the five quinas and the bordure of seven castles, surmounted by a royal crown. The denomination numeral 160 appears to the left of the shield and the date is divided on either side — '17' to the left and '95' to the right — with three quatre-foil floral ornaments flanking the right side. The encircling legend reads MARIA· I· D· G· PORT· REGINA· ET· BRAS· D·, identifying the queen as Maria I, by the Grace of God, Queen of Portugal and Lady of Brazil.
