Reverse description Central device depicts a large armillary sphere mounted on a decorative stand, its meridian rings and parallels rendered in fine relief against the flat field, symbolising Portuguese maritime dominion and the overseas empire. Two crossed arrows or sceptres flank the globe at the cardinal points. The abbreviated Latin motto is distributed around the sphere in four segments reading SUBQ. SIGN. NATA STAB., separated by the armillary bands. The legend is enclosed between the toothed rim and an inner beaded circle, consistent with the heavy-type reverse design used across all three mints of issue.
