Obverse description Central field dominated by the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield displaying the traditional quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) within a rectangular bordure of castles — surmounted by a large royal crown with cross finial. The date is split to either side of the crown, and the denomination 160 appears at the right of the legend. A continuous circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, separated from the toothed border by an inner ring. The engraving is bold and deeply struck in the heavy-type style characteristic of the early José I coinage.
