Seleukeia ad Kalykadnon occupied a strategically awkward position in Cilicia Tracheia — rugged, coastal, perpetually contested between Seleukid, Armenian, and later Roman spheres of influence. The city's bronze coinage functioned almost entirely within a local subsistence economy; the terrain made large-scale trade impractical and Roman administrative reach, even after the province of Cilicia was formalized in 67 BC following Pompey's campaign against the pirates, remained loose in the interior river valleys.
The SNG Levante reference places this type among a well-documented but narrowly distributed civic series, most surviving examples of which show heavy wear consistent with prolonged local use before bronze recycling or hoarding ended circulation.
