Anhalt-Zerbst occupies an outsized place in 18th-century dynastic history as the birthplace of Sophie von Anhalt-Zerbst, who left the principality in 1744 to become Catherine the Great of Russia. Frederick August ruled this tiny, perpetually indebted territory through the Seven Years' War, which disrupted trade and strained the coinage — the debased billon content of issues like this one reflects chronic fiscal pressure rather than any deliberate monetary reform.
