| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing bust of Rafael Carrera, President of Guatemala, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail to the hair and facial features. The engraver's signature FRENER appears in small capitals at the base of the truncation. A circular legend surrounds the effigy, reading RAFAEL CARRERA PTE DE LA R. DE GUATEMALA, separated from the beaded border by an open field. The portrait is executed in the academic European style characteristic of mid-19th century engraver Johann-Baptist Frener. |
