Gustav III had seized power in the coup of August 1772, dissolving a parliament that had governed Sweden for half a century under the so-called Age of Liberty. The recoinage reforms that followed were partly fiscal housekeeping, partly a statement of restored royal authority over monetary affairs. The 16 öre denomination itself was an awkward transitional value, bridging older riksdaler fractions and the rationalised system Gustav's treasury was working toward.
The two-year production window closed as the denomination was effectively rendered obsolete by subsequent monetary legislation in 1776.
