This piece commemorates the marriage of Gustav II Adolf to Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg in 1620, a union with considerable strategic weight — it aligned Sweden with the Hohenzollern electorate at a moment when Gustav was consolidating Protestant alliances ahead of Sweden's entry into the Thirty Years' War. The wedding itself took place in Stockholm in November of that year.
The 16 mark denomination placed this firmly in presentation territory, struck for gifting rather than circulation. Swedish gold of this period survives in very small numbers, and coronation or nuptial issues were produced in strictly limited quantities by the Stockholm mint.
