Frederik III introduced this denomination in 1668 partly as a political statement following the revolution of 1660, in which the Danish nobility surrendered its tax exemptions and the king assumed absolute hereditary rule. The new monetary system that followed was reorganized to reflect a centralized royal authority that had simply not existed before. The guldkrone was pegged to the 16-mark value in the reformed currency structure.
Surviving examples in any grade are uncommon. The 1668 issue represents early production under the reformed mint administration, and die quality varied considerably across the short run.
