Reverse description A fast quadriga driven to the left by a winged Nike, who extends her arms to guide the four galloping horses. A solar star or eight-rayed symbol appears in the upper field above the horses. The two-part legend ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑΣ in the upper field and ΦΙΛΙΣΤΙΔΟΣ in the exergue identifies the coin as struck in the name of Queen Philistis. The composition follows the grand Syracusan chariot-race tradition established on earlier coinage, executed with vigorous, dynamic modeling of the horses and chariot wheel.
