The Kathiri Sultanate of Hadhramaut operated in a state of near-constant conflict with the Qu'aiti during the mid-nineteenth century, and coinage from this period reflects the fragmented authority over the Hadhramaut valley rather than any consolidated fiscal administration. Ghalib ibn Muhsin al-Kathiri, whose name this issue bears, ruled during one of the more contested stretches of that rivalry.
The khumsi denomination — literally a fifth — derives from a regional fractional system largely independent of Ottoman or British Indian monetary frameworks, despite Aden's growing influence on coastal trade.
