The 16 gourdes denomination is an artifact of the gourde's original peg to the Spanish dollar at a rate of 16 gourdes to one dollar — a relationship established in the early republic and retained long after it lost practical meaning. By the time this centennial note appeared in 1927, the fixed-rate logic behind that denomination had been obsolete for decades, making the 16 gourdes more a commemorative acknowledgment of monetary history than a functioning unit of account.

The 1827–1927 dates mark the centennial of the gourde's formal establishment. Collector interest in this issue tends to concentrate on the date pairing itself.
