The Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires was the dominant financial institution in Argentina through much of the nineteenth century, and this fractional note belongs to a series issued as the country attempted to stabilize its monetary system following decades of currency disorder. The 16 centésimos denomination is peculiar — fractional notes of this specific value are uncommon in Latin American issues of the period, and the denomination itself reflects the awkward conversion arithmetic involved in transitioning from the old peso moneda corriente to the peso de oro system formalized by the 1881 monetary law.
