Siphnos, a small Cycladic island, had been one of the wealthiest communities in the Aegean world during the Archaic period — its gold and silver mines generating tribute to Delphi reportedly worth 100 talents annually. By the time this bronze was struck, those mines had long been flooded, likely by Samian raiders around 525 BC, and the island's prosperity was a memory.
