Nepal's first 155.5-gram gold coin, this piece was authorized by Nepal Rastra Bank to mark the 50th anniversary of the first summit of Everest — the May 1953 ascent by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. The anniversary year was 2003, and the coin's actual release slipped into 2004, a common enough occurrence with large-format commemoratives of this kind.
Gyanendra Bir Bikram, the issuing monarch, had assumed the throne under deeply troubled circumstances following the 2001 royal massacre that killed nine members of the royal family including King Birendra.
