The 1993 Chinese Gold Panda series introduced several large-denomination kilo-weight issues aimed squarely at the international bullion collector market, which China had been cultivating aggressively since the Panda program launched in 1982. The 1500 Yuan Peacock is among the more obscure of these oversized pieces — mintages on the kilo-format coins were deliberately kept low, and the Peacock design ran as a separate prestige issue distinct from the standard Panda reverse used that year.
Struck at the Shanghai or Shenzhen Mint, attribution between the two facilities for this specific issue remains contested in reference literature.
