China's Panda gold series, launched in 1982, was among the first bullion programs in the world to change its reverse design annually — a deliberate marketing decision that transformed the coins into collector targets rather than pure bullion instruments. The 100-gram denomination sits at the top of the standard annual Panda lineup, with the People's Bank of China tightly controlling authorized mintages through a network of official distributors rather than selling directly to the public.

The 2023 issue was produced at one of three mints — Shenzhen, Shanghai, or Shenyang — though the finished coins carry no individual mint mark, a long-standing policy that has frustrated attribution specialists for decades.
