Below the denomination, the legend 'MIL QUINIENTOS PESOS ORO' is inscribed in two lines, with the fineness notation 'LEY 0.900' appearing in the lower exergue. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA' arcs around the upper periphery. The entire design is framed by a beaded inner border running parallel to the reeded edge. |

Issued as part of Colombia's numismatic program commemorating the Banco de la República's gold museum in Bogotá — the Museo del Oro — which by 1973 held one of the largest collections of pre-Columbian goldwork in the world, much of it recovered through decades of acquisition from huaqueros and private estates. The bank had been systematically building the collection since 1939, when it purchased its first piece, a Muisca votive figurine.
KM#255 belongs to a broader series of collector-oriented gold issues the Banco de la República produced through the early 1970s, aimed primarily at export markets and numismatic buyers rather than domestic circulation.
