Issued to mark the centenary of Norway's dissolution of its union with Sweden in 1905, this commemorative was struck exactly ninety-nine years after Oscar II abdicated the Norwegian throne — the first peaceful dissolution of a modern European dynastic union achieved without armed conflict. The separation followed a contested referendum in which over 99% of participating Norwegian voters chose independence, though the turnout itself excluded women, who would not gain full suffrage in Norway until 1913.
The .917 fineness places this squarely in crown gold — the same standard used by the Norwegian royal family's British counterparts for sovereign coinage since 1526.
