Issued to mark the centennial of Norway's peaceful dissolution from its union with Sweden in 1905, this coin commemorates one of the few instances in modern European history where a political union ended without armed conflict. The Norwegian Storting unilaterally declared the union dissolved on June 7th, 1905, a move Sweden initially contested before accepting following a Norwegian referendum in August of that year — in which 368,208 voted for dissolution against just 184 opposed.
KM#473 was struck in a limited proof issue, with gold coinage of this denomination being an infrequent instrument of Norges Bank's commemorative program.
