| Obverse description | Central field features the National Arms of Paraguay — a five-pointed star within a wreath of olive and palm branches, surmounted by radiating sunburst rays. The date '19 73' flanks the arms at left and right, with the denomination '1500 GUARANIES' inscribed below. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA DEL PARAGUAY' runs along the upper periphery, with a beaded border surrounding the entire design. |

| Additional information |
Issued as part of Paraguay's 1972–1973 commemorative gold series marking the centenary of the end of the War of the Triple Alliance, in which Paraguay lost an estimated 60–70% of its total population — and over 90% of its adult male population — to the combined armies of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Estigarribia, the honoree here, belongs to a different century entirely: he commanded Paraguayan forces during the Chaco War against Bolivia (1932–1935), achieving a string of unlikely victories that secured the disputed Chaco Boreal for Paraguay.
He died in a plane crash in 1940, just weeks into his presidency.
