Additional information

The Frauenkirche in Dresden was destroyed in the Allied firebombing of February 1945 and lay in ruins — deliberately left uncleared by East German authorities as a war memorial — for over five decades. Reconstruction began only after reunification, funded largely by international donors, and was completed in 2005. This coin was issued the year before that completion, placing it squarely in the final phase of a rebuilding effort that had taken sixty years to begin.
