The Republic of the Congo — not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of the Congo — has issued a steady stream of small-format gold pieces through the Frankfurt-based coin distributor MDM, largely targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation. This Mandela issue appeared sixteen years after his 1994 presidential inauguration, part of a broader wave of African commemoratives that flooded the market around his 90th birthday in 2008.
At 0.5 grams, the gold content is negligible by bullion standards. These were sold at substantial premiums over spot.
