Joachim Gauck served as German Federal President from 2012 to 2017, a largely ceremonial post he held with particular moral authority given his earlier career as a civil rights activist in East Germany and later as the first Federal Commissioner overseeing the Stasi archives. Burkina Faso's CFA franc issues of this type — tiny fractional gold pieces nominally denominated in a currency pegged to the euro — were produced for the European collector market, not for any domestic circulation. The issuing country has no connection to the subject beyond the legal authority to authorize the design.
