The 2008 European Championship was held jointly in Austria and Switzerland — neither of which is Ivory Coast, nor are Ivorian clubs or the national team participants in UEFA competition. These gold miniatures, struck in fractional weights for the collector market, were issued by dozens of unrelated African franc zone nations under licensing arrangements that had nothing to do with the host countries or the tournament itself. CAF member states found the format commercially useful precisely because the gold content was real while the nominal face value was effectively notional.
