The Colossus of Rhodes — a bronze statue of Helios that stood at the entrance to Rhodes harbor — collapsed in an earthquake around 226 BC, having stood for roughly 54 years. Ancient sources including Pliny the Elder record that even fallen, the statue drew visitors for centuries; few could wrap their arms around a single thumb. The Rhodians reportedly declined to rebuild it after an oracle discouraged the effort.
The Ivory Coast has no historical connection to the Seven Wonders tradition. This is a bullion-adjacent collector piece issued under a licensing arrangement common among small-denomination CFA franc nations seeking hard currency revenue from the numismatic market.
