This piece belongs to a wave of small-format gold issues that several West African CFA franc states licensed to European minting houses in the 2000s — coins legally denominated in CFA francs but designed, struck, and sold entirely to the collector market abroad, never intended to circulate in Abidjan or anywhere else. The Ivory Coast had no meaningful role in the creative or production decisions. Pobjoy Mint struck many of these issues under licensing arrangements.
Chopin died in 1849, a Polish national who spent much of his adult life in Paris — his connection to Francophone West Africa begins and ends with this coin's denomination.
