Additional information

The "Big Five" label originated with big-game hunters as a ranking of the five most dangerous African animals to kill on foot — a grim provenance that wildlife conservation marketing has largely laundered into respectability. Togo has no particular zoological or historical claim to this iconography; the issue is aimed squarely at the European collector market, produced under the CFA franc framework administered by the BCEAO.

At 0.1418 grams, the gold content is negligible — roughly one-quarter the weight of a U.S. dime in base metal.
