Cameroon's wildlife coin series from this period was produced under contract by a European private mint and sold exclusively through numismatic channels — none entered circulation in Cameroon itself. The "small type" designation distinguishes this from a concurrent large-format issue struck the same year, a production decision driven by market segmentation rather than any official monetary policy.

The black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) had already been declared regionally extinct across much of central Africa by 2010, with the western subspecies confirmed functionally extinct that same year.
