Andorra's coinage history is peculiar: the principality issued no official circulating currency of its own for most of its existence, relying on French and Spanish coins by convention. The 1980 silver series, of which this is part, represented the first internationally recognized numismatic issues under the co-princeship — one seat held by the Bishop of Urgell, here Joan Martí i Alanis, who served in that role from 1971 to 2003. The Latin inscription acknowledges his ecclesiastical rather than civil authority.
