Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Bhumibol Adulyadej's accession — June 9, 1946 — this coin commemorates the longest reign of any monarch in Thai history. Bhumibol had ascended unexpectedly following the death of his brother Ananda Mahidol, whose fatal gunshot wound in the Grand Palace that year remains officially unresolved. By 1996, the Golden Jubilee celebrations drew heads of state from across the world to Bangkok, and the commemorative coin program was extensive.
The 3.75 gram weight is deliberate: one-tenth of a troy ounce in Thai baht gold convention.
