The Chinese Unicorn series launched in 1994 as a direct competitor to the Panda program, targeting international bullion collectors rather than domestic circulation. The 150 Yuan denomination in this series corresponds to the kilo-weight format, and the 1995 issue carries notoriously low mintage figures — production was capped at 200 pieces worldwide, making it among the scarcest of the modern Chinese commemorative silver kilos.
The People's Bank contracted striking to the Shanghai Mint. Surviving examples rarely appear at auction, and when they do, condition is almost always Proof as issued — unsurprising given that none entered commerce as spendable currency.
