China's Unicorn series launched in 1994 as a direct competitor to the Panda bullion program, targeting collectors rather than the spot-silver market. The 150 Yuan denomination placed this piece firmly outside everyday commerce from the moment of issue — a 622-gram coin was never going to circulate. Production was handled at Chinese state mints under tight mintage controls, and the series was discontinued after only a few years, making the 1994 inaugural issue the one collectors anchor the set to.
