Obverse description A stylized plum blossom tree in full bloom occupies the central field, its branches extending gracefully across the coin's surface in high relief against a polished gold ground. The blossoms are rendered in fine detail, evoking the traditional Chinese artistic motif associated with the Lunar New Year. The inscription 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is arranged along the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The date 2003 appears in Arabic numerals within the lower exergual area.
