Issued in anticipation of the 2010 Shanghai World Exposition, this piece is part of a series China released across 2009 and 2010 to commemorate what became the most-attended World's Fair in history — over 73 million visitors across its six-month run. The Chinese government invested an estimated 45 billion USD in infrastructure and venue construction on the former Jiangnan Shipyard site along the Huangpu River.
The 150 yuan denomination itself is unusual for modern Chinese commemoratives, which more commonly follow round-number face values.
