Banca Națională a României has issued commemorative polymer notes before — the 2018 centenary issue being the most prominent — but this one returns to paper, an unusual choice for a modern commemorative. Brâncuși was born in 1876 in Hobița, Gorj, and died in Paris in 1957, having spent the bulk of his working life in France and become a French citizen late in life, which made his status as a Romanian national symbol politically complicated during the communist period.
The 150th anniversary falls in 2026. Designer Costandache Laurentiu-Mihai is associated with previous BNR commemorative work.
