Additional information

Pedro V died of cholera in November 1861 at age twenty-four, cutting short a reign that had already seen serious monetary reform efforts in the Portuguese overseas territories. The Diu mint — one of the last active colonial mints operating under Portuguese authority on the Indian subcontinent — handled a relatively small volume of production for these fractional silver issues, which circulated alongside locally-struck and imported coinages in a market that was never fully rationalized under Lisbon's control.

Gomes records this as a single-year type for the reign.
